Het schijnt echter dat als ze in waterdruppeltjes worden verspreid ze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-19823-5\">waterstof gaan produceren<\/a>. Een broodje aap of re\u00ebel? De techniek zal nog wel wat bijgeslepen en verder ontwikkeld moeten worden, stellen de onderzoekers. De bacteri\u00ebn in dit proces produceren overigens wel kooldioxide.<!--more--><br \/>\nWaterstof zou de de brandstof van de toekomst zijn, maar ik heb daar zo mijn vragen over. Een lastig probleem is, onder meer, dat het nogal wat energie kost om waterstof te produceren. Er zijn bacteri\u00ebn die dat doen, maar dat schijnt niet eht een succes te zijn. De meeste waterstof die we nu gebruiken wordt met behulp van veel elektrische energie vrijgemaakt. Onderzoekers van de universiteit van Bristol in Wales denken met hun &#8216;algenfabriekjes&#8217; de ideale oplossing gevonden te hebben. Die produceren in waterdruppeltjes bij daglicht waterstof.<br \/>\nIn de druppeltjes zitten zo&#8217;n tienduizend algencellen. Hoe verder je in die druppeltjes doordringt hoe lager het zuurstofgehalte. Daar worden de <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogenase\">hydrogenases<\/a> actief, enzymen die waterstof produceren.<br \/>\nPer milliliter water heb je dan een kwartmiljoen van die fabriekjes. Om het vrijkomen van waterstof te stimuleren, bedachten de onderzoekers dat het dienstig was deze druppeltjes met leven te omhullen met een dunne bacterieschil. Die bacteri\u00ebn moeten de zuurstof vasthouden om zo de activiteit van de hydrogenases te stimuleren.<\/p>\n<h2>Milieu<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Die aanpak om waterstof te produceren is in potentie niet milieuschadelijk&#8221;, meldt Stephen Mann <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2020\/november\/hydrogen-producing-droplets.html\">in een persbericht<\/a>. Volgens zijn collega <a href=\"http:\/\/Xin\">Xin Huang<\/a> van het technologisch instituut in Harbin (China) is de methode simpel en flexibel. &#8220;Die kan opgeschaald worden zonder de levensvatbaarheid van de cellen te schaden, maar ook voor andere producten gebruikt worden zoals alcohol.&#8221; Toch zal nog bewezen moeten worden dat deze methode ook op grotere schaal werkt. Maar al te vaak blijkt wat in het lab werkt niet werk in de industri\u00eble praktijk.
