De maan kan nog steeds getroffen worden met een kans van 1,7%. Dat zou dan een klap opleveren met een kracht van een atoombom van 8 megaton (oftewel 500 x de Hirosjimabom), voor zover nu bekend is. Waar die steenklomp (?) van 40 m bij 90 m terecht zou kunnen komen is nog verre van duidelijk. Ook de maan schijnt het &#8216;doelwit&#8217; van de planeto\u00efde kunnen zijn.<!--more--><br \/>\nHet effect van zo&#8217;n botsing is afhankelijk van de samenstelling, snelheid en massa van de planeto\u00efde. Daar is nog niet veel van bekend (het ding is nog erg ver weg). Geschat wordt dat als de klomp op de aarde terecht zou komen dat een verwoestend effect heeft op een stuk aarde met een diameter van 50 km.<br \/>\nDie kan volgens berekeningen van de NASA mogelijk neerkomen op een lange strook aarde van het noorden van Zuid-Amerika, het zuiden van Azi\u00eb, het Midden-Oosten en Afrika met een groot stuk Stille en Indische Oceaan daarin. Die kans is dus maar 2%.
